Portrait with Baby and Vegetables

Just a few pictures of little B from this past week.  We grew all three little veggies in the above picture.

Two pictures below are B's new favorite game:  acrobatics with his father.  It's safer than it looks I'm sure.  And of course a picture from Ellen's visit (lala on another blog).  We were honored with two visits on her Great Southern Tour of 2011.   Of course Benjamin decided to take an epic nap right before her second visit, so this picture is from the 15 minutes that they actually spent together after he woke up.  Why are epic naps always so ILL-TIMED??  It was nice to be able to spend the time with Ellen by myself though.

Sigh.  I love visitors.

Ready to go

I tried to tell him that we're not going for a few weeks yet, but Benjamin is just so excited to see his grandparents, Aunties Sara and Karen, and other friends.  He is so eager he's climbing up onto and into the suitcase.

Actually, I took the suitcase out specifically for him to climb on.  This morning we lowered his crib after I found him standing up in a precarious position when I went in to check on him at 6:30.  Poor Benjamin is quite good at getting up, but doesn't know how to get down.

The suitcase will probably still be out by the time we leave for NY at the end of July.  We are all looking forward to seeing the Wilson side of the family--and getting out of the Texas heat.  I hope you are picking blueberries for us up there!

A visit, a swim, and a lesson learned

Let's start with the lesson learned first. On Saturday we decided to take a nice family walk in the park in the morning before it got too hot.  The temperature has been getting up to 100 for the last few weeks already.  The mornings have still be somewhat cool.  The only problem with this plan (which I had been looking forward to all week) was that at 8am when we wanted to leave, Benjamin had not pooped.  He almost always does this important daily (for him) function at or before 6:30.  Long story short, we found ourselves thirty minutes later about a mile away from the car, no diaper bag, with a poopy baby slung through the moby wrap.  I don't know exactly how this happened. Why would I not bring a diaper?  Anyway, there we were.

I'm realizing the details of this story are truly gross.  So I'll just say that in lieu of anything other than toilet paper, we ended up rinsing the baby under a rather awkward sink faucet in a park bathroom.  So now we have a naked (cleanish) baby, no diaper, and another mile to go back to the car.  So we just wrapped him up and hoped for the best.  The poor baby slept most of the way back.

No pictures of that outing, thank goodness.

The weekend before that attempt at a good time, we truly had a great time with JB's family.  I think we really outdid ourselves with this year's father's day-mother's day-dad's birthday-whatever else paella fest celebration.  JB perfected his paella technique and brother Richard outdid himself with tapas and a spanish orange cake made by boiling whole oranges until they are soft, pulverizing them peels and all, then adding a lot of sugar.

Visiting his great-grandmother is always a highlight of Benjamin's trip to East Texas.  She sang to him and we all joined in as Benjamin scooted around exploring his new surroundings.

Benjamin went for what I think was his first swim on that trip.  Now swimming is his favorite thing to do.  We took him camping on lake Whitney not long after this trip to SS, and he loved swimming in the cold fresh water.  Now when he sees our little blow-up pool in the backyard he starts kicking with excitement.  I was skeptical at first about starting him on swimming lessons, but a friend and I decided to do it together, and now eight-month B and his friend J are learning how to hold their breath under water.

Here are just a few more pics from our daily life here in Waco.  We are proud of our tomatoes this year.  We planted some beautiful heirloom varieties and managed to get enough fruit set before the heat struck this year, so we are still picking them every day.  We make a daily ritual out of picking the nearly ripe tomatoes before the birds can get to them. We eat tomatoes every day-- bruschetta, gazpacho, tomato salad, ratatouille, or roasted tomatoes--and yet we still have a good pile of them on the counter at the end of each day.

Another theme this summer is watermelon.  Benjamin loves it, and we have made two batches of watermelon granita so far this summer.  It's kind of a humble sorbet:  pureed watermelon with lemon juice and sugar poured into a 13 x 9 pan, thrown in the freezer and whisked every 30 minutes or so until it freezes into lovely snow-cone-like flakes.

I actually started this blog entry some weeks ago, so the first story is kind of old.  Since then we took a mercifully uneventful walk in the park with Benjamin.  We are learning.  Since then Benjamin has also started to pull himself up on just about anything he can get his hands on.   I turned my back for a minute yesterday and he had nearly pulled himself up on the coffee table.  I find it hard to imagine him being a greater joy than he already is, but every day he is more fun and interactive and my joy doubles again as I watch him learn and explore his little world.

Little blue boy

Doesn't he look like such a little boy?  Benjamin (about 7 months) is chasing the dog around the rug in this picture.  Poor Brazos is surprisingly patient with a baby grabbing her feet and pulling her hair.  She doesn't really like it, per se, but she seems to have decided that she would prefer the attention to escaping entirely, which she could easily do.

Every day B gets closer fully crawling--right now it's an army crawl with some knee action mixed in.  He got all the way across the living room yesterday, exploring everything as he went, and I followed him around, discovering that things like guitar stands and fire-place pokers should no longer be on the floor.

I cared for a one-year old baby with Benjamin a few days last week, and while it was hard for me minding two babies at times, Benjamin seemed to love it.  The one-year old taught him to clap and hit blocks together in his hands.  And Benjamin was studying his friend's standing and cruising action with great interest.   I think B was even imitating the sounds E was making.

We had a little music gathering in the backyard before the M-Rs when back to Oaxaca for the summer, and we were having so much fun that I neglected to see that Benjamin was really really tired.  He was loving all of the friends to play with for a while, and then I realized I was taking pictures of my baby looking up at me with very tired eyes.  This is the kind of voyeuristic approach to suffering that photographers in war zones sometimes get criticized for.  Oops. I think you can see the tiredness in his eyes in the picture below.

So the musicians played a lullaby to say goodnight and off he went.

Thou wast the prettiest babe...

Our budding dramatist

I don't have many particular aspirations of my own for young Ben; I am content that he has a good home from which to follow his own interests and dreams. With that said, I think it would be ok if Benjamin were interested in books and music.  We are trying to encourage the interest in books with Shakespeare onesies and visiting English professors.

As if we didn't have enough English majors around the house already, Stephanie came for a visit in April.  And I have to say--her professorial skills were not really all that helpful.  Benjamin just isn't ready apparently.  Good thing she has other good qualities as a friend and baby-holder extraordinaire.  Yes, the Smith kitchen was deliciously productive with a live-in baby-holder around.  And you don't have to have a Phd to read "Are you my mother?" to a six-month old.  Thank goodness.

So friends, baby-holders, come one, come all!  You will not go hungry.

In other news, Benjamin is talking like crazy these days and has even had his first serious conversation with his father.  After he finished eating sweet potatoes one day, and JB and I were sitting with him eating our dinner, Benjamin started speaking his bah-bah-bahs directly to JB, who responded in kind, and the conversation went on for about ten minutes. They really took turns talking, and you could tell Benjamin was really listening to JB talk.  Benjamin was amused with himself and his sounds sometimes even took on the inflections of adult speech patterns.  I know this is just a normal stage in development, but it was truly amazing to watch.

I apple new york.

Happy Easter and happy birthday to Grandpa Wilson!  Wish we could be in NY for your birthday this year.  Aunt Sara made sure Benjamin had some NY gear, and it finally fits.  I hope he'll look back at these pictures and remember where half of his family is.

Appropriately, I believe the spit-up on his shirt here includes the applesauce that he had for lunch today.

While we're talking about apples, I made five apple pies for a fundraiser last weekend, and have vowed never again to make that many in one day again.  Oh but the one we ate was so good.  I love that Benjamin was born in NY apple season.  Maybe he'll get to visit one day for his birthday and go apple picking.

6 month Benny

Over the last six months it has become clear to us that we have an easy-going baby.  He has his needs and makes sure we know about them, but otherwise, he is playful and curious, but not very fussy or particular.  This was bad when I was trying to breastfeed exclusively:  he was most likely still hungry after some feedings, but decided, "Oh well, I can wait.  She'll feed me again later."

Benjamin's easy-going nature makes starting solid foods fun.  Rice cereal?  Yes please!  Carrots and beets?  Sure!  Pears?  My favorite!  Applesauce?  Also my favorite!   I have also discovered that making baby food is easy and sort-of fun.  Just cook, add water, and puree it to death in the food processor.

I don't know why these pictures came out kind of fuzzy.

Benjamin is patient

Benjamin wants to do it himself
In other news, Benjamin had his six month doctor's appointment yesterday, and his weight is back up to where it should be.  And his height is what you would expect for a baby with tall parents.   Ok, I just want to get these pictures posted.  I have more from last weekend when we had some visitors, but that will have to wait.  Those visitors can speak up if they would prefer not to have pictures of themselves posted here!  I've got some good ones...
