Jack Brennan

We are, of course, honored that Sara and Sean would choose to name their first child after JB.  The Brennan name will be carried on!

Just kidding.  I know you didn't choose the name because it is JB's, but we like in all the same.  I good name for a beautiful baby.  I am counting down the days until our visit.

Tuckered out

The big news is that we welcomed cousin Jack into the world on Friday!  I feel so proud of my sister for giving birth!  How I wish I could have been there!  I can't wait to meet beautiful baby Jack in July.  If I had a picture, I would post it.  As soon as I get one, I will.

One of Benjamin's favorite activities this summer is getting wet.  We go to the lake, we swim in his little pool in the backyard, and we run through the sprinkler.  And those are just the ways that we PLAN on getting wet.  This morning he was playing in the yard and JB and I turned our backs for a few seconds and Benjamin came running toward us inexplicably wet all over.  I really don't know how that happened.

We had a fun day at the lake yesterday with some friends.  I don't think there is any better way to tucker him out than to get him splashing in the lake for an hour.  The picture above is Benjamin's post-swimming snacking swoon.

We are getting ready for another trip to East Texas and some camping pretty soon, then my trip to El Salvador in mid-June, and then New York in July.  The tickets are purchased!

Snips and Snails and Puppy-dog tails

I was astonished to find this, pictured above, yesterday when I sat down with Benjamin in his play area.  I lifted up a little piece of cloth and there were his babies, all in a row, tucked in and taking a nap.  He's been playing with these "babies," as he calls them, for weeks now, and he has made beds for them before, but I was just astonished that he had done it all on his own when I wasn't in the room.  It wasn't for me to see at all; he was just playing pretend by himself.  As I'm writing here, I'm trying to convince you that this was worth being surprised about.  Maybe the feeling was more like wonder tinged with regret that he now has an independent imagination.

JB got Benjamin a little guitar at a second hand store last week, and B has been jamming with dad ever since.  My favorite snapshots though are of Benjamin playing with snails.  I've commented on his interest in this before, but snail hunting is now a full-blown obsession.  Overheard from JB while he is playing music with several friends who are married but don't (yet) have kids:  "If you are having any doubts about having children in the future, consider the snails."

I don't think he meant this to be a cautionary consideration.  He didn't mean, "consider how gross the snails are when you find them in your children's pockets," but consider how helpful the children are in helping rid the yard of snails that destroy your garden.

Last week even when it hadn't rained in a while, B and I were out with his bucket ("buppet") finding old snail shells and the occasional misguided snail in the garden.  But last night and today it rained, and oh the joy!  As you can see in the pictures below, Benjamin picked a whole bucket of snails this morning.  Snail hunting kept him busy and happy for a whole hour or more, and he probably helped save some of our plants too.

A look back at Easter

My blog posts are all out of order this year.  These pictures of Benjamin at our church's annual Easter Retreat out in the country are from, what, a month ago now?  Back when the bluebonnets were in bloom, before Benjamin's hair cut, back when he still needed those seersucker pants rolled up around his ankles.

This has been a truly beautiful spring here in central Texas.  Benjamin has enjoyed every minute of being outside helping us dig and plant and water the yard into recovery from last year's drought.   And we have enjoyed teaching him about flowers, bugs, and watering cans. It hasn't rained in a couple of weeks now but Benjamin still looks under the logs and in the grass out back for snails to put in his bucket.

The roses in the bottom picture of this post are from our garden this year.  Last year we had a few straggling blooms on our rose bushes, but this year we figured out about feeding and pruning roses, and TA DA!  Roses.  I probably would have thought roses were too hard to grow to plant them myself, so I am thankful they were already here.  It is nice to cut my own flowers.  They make a lovely center-piece for a nice dinner, don't they?
